Ori Gallery’s Fundraiser to
Renovate the House Next Door is Now Live!
Who are we?
Ori Gallery is both an organizing collective and a physical art space located on Mississippi avenue in a historically Black neighborhood of Portland, OR. Borne of our shared dreams for autonomy, agency, and abundance as Black Queer Trans creators; we were founded by and for community members seeking to carve out our own spaces rather than fighting for recognition from primarily white institutions.
Since Ori’s creation in 2018, in collaboration with individual community members, sibling grassroots organizations and major arts institutions in the city, we have produced individual and group art exhibitions, hosted and lead community workshops, provided free organizing space to the public, hosted mutual aid campaigns, professional development for artists and organizers and much more.
Ori provides a chance to tell our stories without filters or gatekeepers, a chance to create healing spaces filled with images that reflect our lives as told by us, a chance to be unapologetically ourselves and affirmed as such by our peers without the scrutiny of the dominant hegemony.
What do we need?
Within the first year of Ori opening its doors, we had already outgrown our space. However, this year, with the support of our community, funders, and donations, we recently purchased the lot our gallery is on outright, a house included! The house that is on the lot with our gallery unfortunately suffered a fire in the attic in January of 2023. Now that we have assumed responsibility for the property and restoration process, we are identifying costs as we go, with the help of architects, consultants, and community stakeholders. We are taking on a major task of creating the arts center and neighborhood space of our community's dreams, including remediating the soil, reimagining the space and place that the gallery and house occupy, construction planning, and more.
With this land, we can expand beyond the 400 sq. ft. exhibition space and offer our community:
> Outdoor Events
> Permanent Low-income Housing for Black Creatives
> Accessible Housing for Artists in Residence
> Larger Art Productions and Exhibits
> Secure and Safe(r) Space to be Ourselves
We have also seen first-hand how great the Portland artist community’s need for accessible housing is. With that, our primary need right now is to transform this newly acquired resource as soon as possible, while maintaining smooth operations at the gallery to the best of our abilities. Help us keep our momentum by supporting our efforts to secure and restore this space to support our artistic endeavors for years to come.
Ask
We request your support in the form of cash and/or time and labor donations toward our goal of transforming this lot. So far, we have estimated the following costs for a project we expect will take 2+ years to complete:
> $360,000.00 for materials and services: accessibility (ADA etc.), environmental, and architectural consultations; hazardous waste removal; and soil remediation;
> $260,000.00 for personnel and events: grounds and construction project managers; housing coordinator and support staff; marketing and community outreach; and
> $2,000,000.00 for constructions costs and other project expenses, including net-zero environmental features.
We are fundaising on this platform to supplement funds we are actively seeking from grantors and sponsors. Know that the money raised on this platform can serve as a barometer for grantors of our community support for this project (experience has told us these signs of support can increase our chances of receiving funding). We are eager to see what we can do with this land. Dream into it with us…
